OBJECTIVE

The program is designed to introduce students to different refrigeration systems both domestic and commercial, air conditioning systems, heating systems, electricity and electrical components, domestic appliance installation and repair, understanding HVAC blueprints mechanical and electrical sections. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

HVAC Technician program is taught via a combination of lecture, practical exercises in the laboratory. The 840 hour program includes, but it is not limited to, fundamentals of electricity, applications of electricity, electrical motors, fundamentals of refrigeration, domestic and commercial refrigeration, air conditioning systems, HVAC blueprints and domestic appliances.

  • PROGRAM LENGTH:

840 instructional clock hours/35 Semester Credit Hours. This program also requires 210 hours of “Out-of-class” work during the program. The student has 42 weeks to complete the program.

Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the morning shift and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for the evening shift.

Courses are usually taken in the sequence shown below; however, the school reserves the right to modify the sequence as needed.

Language of Instruction: English and Spanish

Completion of the program with a minimum passing grade of “C” or 2.0 grade point average is required for graduation.

Credits may be allowed for previous education. For example, students who have completed some parts of this training at another accredited technical vocational school do not have to repeat it. Refer to Transfer of Course Credit Policy in this catalog.

If transfer credit is approved the student is responsible for purchasing the remaining course(s) in the program to which he or she is applying. The program tuition will be prorated.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM


ECT-102 FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRICTY - 60 Clock Hour


This course teaches the basic concepts of electricity and magnetism, atomic molecular theory of matter, energy sources, connections, electrical circuit, Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law in DC is included. In AC circuit triangle impedance, the power triangle, also the relationship between the parameters of lines and phases shall be taken into account.


ECT-103 PRINCIPLES & APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRICITY I - 60 Clock Hours


This course offers an introduction to general basic knowledge related to the theory of semiconductors, control systems; control devices sensors, and general characteristics of electric drives and the interpretation of schematic diagrams are studied with a view to the successful completion of diagnosis and troubleshooting. The laboratory will practice where necessary measurement methods are applied to identify some typical electric problems and troubleshooting.


ECT-104 PRINCIPLES & APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRICITY II - 60 Clock Hours


This course offers detailed explanation of electrical diagrams and circuitry applied mainly in heating units, air conditioning and refrigeration. The student will learn troubleshooting of several refrigeration components and become familiar with electronic symbols. Laboratory practices where students undertake the assembly of the control circuit of the heating units, air conditioning and refrigeration, as well as the diagnosis and troubleshooting that may arise.


ECT-104 ELECTRIC MOTORS - 60 Clock Hours


In this course the students will learn the basic concepts, characteristics, fundamentals and principle function of the electrical machines. As a result, the students will be able to comprehend like future technicians, recognize most of the electrical machines which they will use. They will learn how to

REF-106 FUNDAMENTALS OF REFRIGERATION I - 60 Clock Hours


This course offers an introduction to basic concepts of temperature, energy, heat, specific heat, and conversion of temperature. It also offers the basic concepts of matter, states of matter, density, gas laws, atmospheric pressure, pressure gauges and refrigeration components. The student will also learn about refrigerant regulation and handling, and their effect on the environment.


REF-107 FUNDAMENTALS OF REFRIGERATION II - 60 Clock Hours


Course will offer an understanding of boiling point of the refrigerant, EPA regulations, recovery, recycle, and reclaim refrigerant. The purpose of tubing and piping as well as how to bend, solder or braze AC pipes. They will also learn about refrigerant codes, how to charge systems and an introduction to automatic controls.


AC-205 AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS I - 60 Clock Hours


This course defines the different air distribution systems and the different unit air conditioning systems. It also explains indoor air quality and the parameters of human comfort. The student will also learn the absorption process, their components and different whit vapor compression systems.


AC-206 AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS II - 60 Clock Hours


This course offers and explanation to heat pumps, electric heat, gas heating systems and its types and circuitry. It also offers an explanation to electric forced air furnace and explain the parameters of typical operating conditions.


AC-209 COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION I - 60 Clock Hours


This course offers a detailed explanation of the four basic components and enhanced components of the refrigeration system. It also explains troubleshooting and typical operating conditions for commercial refrigeration.


AC-210 COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION II - 60 Clock Hours


In this course students, will receive an introduction to application of refrigeration systems such as reach-in refrigeration merchandising, unitary stand-alone refrigeration systems, refrigerated shelves and ice makers. We will also explain troubleshooting of these units by using logic procedures. The student will learn how to minimize electrical hazards while working.


AC-211 DOMESTIC REFRIGERATION I - 60 Clock Hours


In this course students, will receive an introduction to application of refrigeration systems such as reach-in refrigeration merchandising, unitary stand-alone refrigeration systems, refrigerated shelves and ice makers. We will also explain troubleshooting of these units by using logic procedures. The student will learn how to minimize electrical hazards while working.


AC-212 DOMESTIC REFRIGERATION II - 60 Clock Hours


This course will offer students a detailed explanation of domestic freezers and refrigerators. Also, how to troubleshoot typical problems. It describes air conditioning units, the principle operation of the mixed air conditioning unit and heating and the solution of the both the typical electrical and mechanical problems.


AC-213 HVAC BLUE PRINT - 60 Clock Hours


Review of basic mathematical procedures, safety rules and federal law. Symbols and abbreviations used, categories of working drawings, division specifications, orthographic projection, isometric drawing, organizing a drawing sheet, reading architectural plans, ductwork plans, reaching mechanical, electrical and plumbing plans. Introduction to load calculations.


AC-214 DOMESTIC APPLIANCE 60 Clock Hours


This course will teach students on how to select, purchase and install electric and gas ranges, cooktops, ovens, dishwashers, washers and dryers. How to take safety precautions. The different types of gases and flames. Electric appliance parts, appliance service, installation and preventative maintenance of automatic dishwashers, garbage disposers, electric and gas water heaters, washers, electric and gas dryers and microwave ovens.
